Memento Mori Necklace

from 60.00

Memento Mori is the name given to sixteenth through eighteenth century jewelry and art work that was created as a reminder of the inevitability of death and the need to live honorably. In Latin, memento mori means "remember you must die" or "be mindful of death." It refers to a reflection on mortality, a consideration of the fleeting nature of life and all earthly goods and pursuits.  These motifs can be found in designs from cultures all over the world and would often incorporate symbols like skulls, coffins, snakes and other such imagery - vividly illustrating the underlying sentiment of impermanence.

This little hand carved skull & snake charm comes cast in either polished brass or sterling silver and hangs on a 14k Gold-filled or Sterling Silver 16" or  18" or 24"  chain. ((Custom lengths available.)) It is designed as a reminder of the shortness and fragility of human life, and to encourage each person to take advantage of the time we have on this earth.
